sheesh!

PS - if Doug reads this, I am in total shock here, but I wish him well in his endeavors.

Our Assistant city manager Doug Fitzgarald resigned effective the end of his work day yesterday.

And I had to find out about it by reading it on KOAA news. *insert rolling eyes smiley here* (it just posted there 3 hours ago. They scooped the Chieftain!)

I don't do the KOAA News blog so I must've missed it . .

But, noting this, Isn't this kind of like the Rats and Sinking Ships?

KOAA made special sure that they tied this in with Galli by bringing it up and mentioning that there have been difficulties between Council and the City Managers office.

For whatever it's worth, despite any problems between City Management and Council, I always found Doug to be very cordial and a heck of a lot more organized than me. (Then again, who isn't a heck of a lot more organized than me?!)

I'm shocked and disappointed in his resignation. A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do sometimes I guess, but it's too bad it had to come so suddenly. I'm just wondering why he couldn't give it at least until the end of the week so he could tie up a few loose ends.

Oh well.

A person in that position or any position of upper management does not submit a resignation letter in the morning and leave that afternoon unless he was forced, and it had to be a great force. Otherwise he gives his employers ample time to search for a replacement, and help transition the new person into the job. I wonder if the police department escorted him and his blow out box out of the building? It smelled of that kind of a deal.

What's a blow out box?

Knowing Doug, I really don't think the police had to escort him out of there. lol!

But I would like to expand on one of your remarks -

It seems good business, to me, that if any company (generally speaking) wishes to replace a top manager, then at least hire another one and train him in first, or have him on standby, in the very least, unless the party in question did something atrocious.

I don't know Doug all that well, we've worked together on the Clean Up Committee and another project, and from what little I do know, I just don't see that soft spoken and cordial man as being capable of even thinking an atrocious thought let alone carrying one out, so I don't see that as a factor in this at all.

A blow out box is a box that employees who can be fired on a whim keep under their desk so when the fateful time comes they just fill it with their personal items and carry it out the door. Having the police escort him out of the building wouldn't be because of something Doug did, but what was done to him. I do believe, and I have no basis for it other than a hunch, that something atrocious was done to him. Now there is absolutely no continuity in the City Manager's office. They are both gone. Who knows, maybe that is the way the council wanted it. As far as the council not searching for a candidate to replace Galli, the reason is bogus. They just want to rule the kingdom, and they were tired of 2 people telling the king he/she had no clothes.

From what I can tell, his resignation was a complete surprise to everyone, including council.

Whatever his reasons, I do wish him the best and I hope that all is well with him.

What's this about council not having plans to replace Galli? What are your thoughts about the idea of the current acting city manager keeping the job?

Okayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.....well.....

*ahem*

This may sound like a dumb question, but you know, I mean, I like the idea of a mayorship and all, but setting that up would take some time and the people have to elect the new mayor and alla that, so we really need city management in the meanwhile. I hear that our current acting city manager is pleasing to the city, so I guess I don't see anything wrong with putting off looking.

But let me go ahead and ask my dumb question - and I apologize in advance but I am suffering miserably from some stupid flu bug and fibro fog, so maybe I'm not thinking straight here, but anyway - is there any reason why we can't have a mayor AND a City Manager? Just to add some balance? Don't most cities do that anyway?

And, my other question, but this one isn't dumb, who would you nominate to run for the position of Mayor?

Regarding the current "Acting" City Manager . . he's doing fine . . because he's doing nothing . . or at least nothing he's going to get blamed for . . .

Lessee, if you have a "Strong Mayor" and a "Manager" you'll still need the bureaucracy below them, and that would end up being, probably, pretty much what we have now, except you'd have to pay the Mayor more than we currently pay the City Manager (and you'd still have to pay him about what Galli was getting), plus everybody we have now or possibly more . . after all, the Mayor would have an Office and a staff that the City Council currently does not have . .

As for Who . . Anyone who could be proven to be certifiably crazier than those who currently run for Council . .

got any names in mind?

Sounds like starting a Mayorship would cost the city even more money, which means higher taxes...

Maybe it's not such a good idea after all.

I suppose, yeah. Especially if the new charter (which would be required) were to demand TWO Assistants as the current council is recommending . . And, it would be up to the current council, I believe, to create or assist in the creation of a new City Charter were one to be required by a Vote changing the Government Model . . This would all have to be done, and made law before any actual bodies could be elected or hired . .

Just my Guess . . . butwotthehelldoIknow?
