DENVER - Government inspectors sent a warning letter to a company in Denver that prepares food for airline passengers who fly through Denver International Airport. They say they found live and dead roaches and listeria bacteria in the kitchen.

If the company, LSG Sky Chefs, fails a follow-up inspection, it could be banned from selling food to the airlines. LSG Sky Chefs provides food to United, American, Delta and other airlines.

A spokeswoman said Monday the company fired the head chef and conducted major clean-up at its DIA facility, and the company believes it will pass a follow-up inspection.

According to a letter from the Food and Drug Administration to the company, inspectors found live and dead roaches "too numerous to count" in several areas of the kitchen, including at least 40 live insects in the silverware station.

My question is: What in the hell do the roaches eat in a place that prepares food for United and Delta Airlines? I'm sure the dead ones died of starvation.

I suspect they were very small roaches.

Heck, the only time I even get a bag of peanuts is when I fly Southwest, so I have no worries. At least most airlines let you bring your own meal aboard now, though it is hard to keep my beef wellington from getting soggy.

Forget the beef wellington. The Mexican restaurant franchise on Concourse C recently changed to Tamales by La Casita. The tamales smothered in green chili are great.

Tamales by La Casita also operates a Mexican Restaurant at 36th and Tejon in North Denver where they make thousands of red and green tamales daily for shipment to other restaurants.
