Did the Commissioners really think they had the cojones to play hardball with Wal Mart. Queen Loretta is term limited so she has nothing to lose, but the other two should start polishing up their resume's. They are soon to lose their day jobs, both will be one term wonders over this. In my opinion it was the height of conceit to believe that Wal Mart could be forced into the Industrial park by a bunch of political lightweights. Too bad for Pueblo. I think PEDCO is tired of all of the political B@^^$%*T and also tired of courting only flaky telemarketing companies.

This is another one of those deals . . Loretta caved to the "Liberty Point Crowd", after all, when she's out of office, nobody is going to invite her to parties or anything social if she doesn't make friends now . . she's about as smart as a rock . .

And as far as the other two . . UN-ELECT 'EM!

Sheriff Dan Corsentino said it, at the HRC Panel, He spoke of being in Denver at some kind of deal, and was asked; "You people down there don't want a Cement Plant, You don't want a Power Plant, You don't want a Wal Mart Warehouse. What the Hell do you want?"

Good question!

I am not a member of the "Liberty Point" crowd, but I am a Pueblo West resident who trotted over to Deli Dave's to sign their petitions against the distribution center. I laud the commissioners for not granting Wal-Mart the tax breaks that may or may not have resulted in their pulling the distribution center. $400,000 in taxes is budget dust to a billion dollar industry and they could have easily paid it if they were truly interested in coming our community.

Do you really think that a distribution center would have been this town's salvation? I think not. Get over it, Pueblo will survive.

It isn't the idea of a Wal Mart per se, but rather the attidude of anti-growth that is beginning eat around the edges of Pueblo's persona. Over the years we have lost almost all of the lucrative businesses to some place else, while getting the crumbs. It was Wal Mart this time, before it was Budweiser, Adams Aviation and the list goes on and on. No wonder our biggest export is our high school and college graduates. You can only work at Convergys for so long.

tmme,

What was your reason for signing the petition against the distribution center?

Here's a post that I put up pertaining to the same lame statements made on another thread;

Lessee, the County Commissioners were in the process of giving the Pueblo West Golf Course a $420,000 deferment . . . Hmmm, the golf course must employ all of 12-15 people . . Mostly groundskeepers . . now that's a tidy sum of money being kicked out into the economy of Pueblo County every year! And EVERY Community in the Country would have given Wal Mart that particular deferment, as the money in taxes generated by the 500 or so employees of the Warehouse would have made up the difference in all likelyhood. Bet th' Golf Course deal looks REAL GOOD now!

That's something you learn when you're a planner, James, not a carpenter . . . or a hippie . . or whatever.

Wal Mart didn't ask for nearly as much as most of the "Suitcase" industries the city has paid to come to the airport, make a few bucks and leave . . And we've done it for some very large corporations, Sperry, Goodrich, Boeing, just to mention a few of the larger ones . . All that remains is the Goodrich Aircraft Carbon Plant and Trane, the rest either went broke, got bought up in a merger and laid off it's people and closed, or just left after the deferments played out.

And while they contribute to the community economically, I don't care for the employment practices of the Trane Corporation at all. They employ people from Temporary Labor Services, thus paying minimum wages, no benefits, with false promises of "If You do good, We'll put you on the Trane Payroll" . . . that doesn't happen very often . . . my stepson worked out there for nearly 3 years, and was fed that crap for the whole time he was there . . .

Had Wal Mart built here, they would have stayed . . Who's going to buy them out? They manufacture nothing that will become obsolete, and the physical plant would be a large enough investment out of the company's pocket, it wouldn't be feasable to just "Abandon" it as many of the airport industries have done . . .

Personally, I feel the County Commissioners have totally failed the Community, and the Community will feel the sting of this for years to come, both in what could be, and the fact that other companies will not even consider our community as a place to locate . . Why would they?

While I don't advocate Re-Calls, I do think it's time to start a removal or un-elect movement . . Puelen, Nunez need to be removed when their time comes up . . . And for God's Sake, don't elect ANYONE who even begins to sound like Loretta.

This was a reply to an "Out of Towner' who has literally been a one man crusade against Wal Mart . . And it applies to most of the "Negatives" who talk economic improvement, but resist it at every turn . . . May YOUR Children and Grandchildren have to seek employment in Kabul, because there won't be any jobs for them in Pueblo . .

Large,
Thanks for transferring the post. Also great comments on an earlier post cencerning "just what do you people in Pueblo want" as relayed by Dan Corsentino.

"tmme,

What was your reason for signing the petition against the distribution center?"

I didn't want it in Pueblo West. There were other locations in the county that would have provided just as good access to the highway. Why weren't they willing to look at other locations? Maybe they did, who knows. I just don't understand why they wouldn't want one piece of parched prarieland for another . . .

tmme,

OK, what was the reason why you didn't want it in Pueblo West? Did it have something to do with highway access?

I would have loved to see the distribution center come to Pueblo! I think that having it up north by the already existint Sam's and north WalMart would have been a cool idea!

OK, now for a real IQ test . . . The County Commisioners want to "Talk" with Wal Mart . . . Kind of a "It's not what you wanted, but here's a carrot, albiet a little one." . . . . "Can We Make a deal?" Loretta says that they might to be able to come to terms in 60 to 90 days . . .

I wonder what part of . . "We have to get this underway . . We have no more time for quibbling" don't they understand. While I'm neither a Rocket Scientist nor a Grammar Professor, I think Wal Mart said; "We're Done Here." And they will move on . .

Just another reason to remember the County Commisioners at election time . . . and "Reward" them for their foresight!

If the three sttoges would listen to their constituency instead of their egos they would not find themselves trying to put toothpaste back into the tube. It is very difficult to uncommit hari kari. I feel this colossal blunder will haunt the three of them for years. I certainly hope so.

How about todays Paper? Now they're going to offer ANYTHING! And the City Council is getting in the Act!

This is kinda like the old "Close the Barn door after the horse got out", except, it's the whole damned Remuda and they're about Arizona or someplace far South by now!

I wonder if anyone has tried to contact Wal Mart yet? Betcha they don't know a Damned thing about it!

Politicians . . there oughta be a Law . . .

The thing that gets me . . is that a large number of their constituents actually believe these Lyin' B------s, and will probably vote for them again! Nunez sez; "I didn't study it close enough". Hmmmm, he studied it close enough to be against it three weeks ago . . . Puelen, this guy walks faster backwards than he can run forward . . . I've got rocks in my backyard smarter than he!

And Loretta . . As Loren Swelk (love that pen name) said on another thread about another Broom Pilot, "Thank God and Term Limits, she's gone!"

I am withdrawing my Three Stooges comment with my apoligies to the County Commissioners. I ask you now to close your eyes and picture Groucho, Harpo and Chico. Now that you have the picture I am sure you will agree that those three better represent who we have elected. Now that Nunez realizes that the Commissioner's job pays better than the Library Board and much better that Triscuits and Cheez Whiz and Matt understands that though he is still a one trick pony he is virtually unemployable in the real world they need to remember that old adage, " never write a check that your ass can't cover". I hope they can get to the bank before it is cashed.

I think you had best apologize to the Marx Brothers . . . . . heh, heh . . .

They never had a job in Public Service, and they made a good living at portraying humans at their funniest . . . not at their dumbest!

After reading the Commisioner's (Nunez and Puelen) quotes for the last two days, it really P----s me off to think they think we are so dumb that we can't remember back three weeks and what was said! Not everybody in Pueblo County has Alzhiemer's!

As I said in another thread here, I will make every legal effort to aid in the un-election of both of these clowns when their time comes! No "Hate" involved, but I am in the least, insulted!
