Cp-k
Well, James, she's kind of brought it on herself . .
First, she brought an "agenda" to the board when she was elected . . and exposed it in Bessemer Park on Cinco de Mayo . . She attempted to play the "Race" card, in order to get backing for HER political future . . not the School district's, nor the Community's. She has failed to meet ANY compromise that's been offered by both the members and the community . .
In the least, she has been combative as well as divisive on a board that is already dysfnctional to say the very least . . . and instead of taking advantage of that to assume a position of leadership, she moved away and presumes to skirt the Residency requirements, while misusing the position on the board by being unable to vote . . thus rendering the seat she "Occupies" virtually useless!
She has painted the target on her chest (or back, depending upon the point of view) by first separating herself completely from the common goals of the board, making race a dividing point, and then rendering her seat null and void. And of course, the rest of the board, the Administration (to which she aimed most of her agenda), and the local press, quite like a pack of wolves, are going after her . . she's down . . but not probably as far as she's gonna get!
Another thing . . . I'm going to write this because it's something that really bugs me . . . and it has to do with the whole District 60 deal . . While I love my "Khaki Americans", the Chicanos, dearly . . there's an undercurrent of racism building in our community, recently evidenced as the different ways CP-K's Cinco de Mayo speech was received in the community . . and it bothers me . . While I would love to think that "We're all in this together" . . we don't seem to be . . The principal of Cesar Chavez Says; "An Educated "Mexican" Scares the hell out of the Anglos" . . Where in the Hell does that come from ?
An educated "Mexican" is a better American than one that isn't! An Educated "Mexican" won't buy the B.S. about "The Man" holding the Chicanos back! An Educated "Mexican" will make this country a better place to live in. I deal with my friends daily, my Boss at school is a Torres, my associate teachers and professors have Hispanic (where is Hispania?) names, My Protege, and assistant, and more, friend, is a Velasquez, My customers have hispanic names, My closest neighbor is hispanic, My "Cruising Buddy" and traveling companion when we go in the Street Rods is a Terrones and none are "Second Best" . . they're "Educated Mexicans" I guess . . They not only DON'T scare me, they give me hope that someday (and it's coming fast) that our Tan brethren and sisters will be absolutely educated, and equal in every way . . and the stigma of racism is erased from their eyes . . there's no place for it in our society!
As long as they don't decide to become separatists and demand the return of "New Spain"! And that's the underlying message I hear from the Principal Lawrence Hernandez . . I believe he's as much a Racist as most of the KKK members in the South in the '30s! And that goes for Prof. David Sandoval at the College on the Hill! Education has done nothing for those people!
